Twinspire Profitline Numbers and Finding Value

It’s a Monday afternoon and I’m in my office.  Since I am meeting with a client for dinner tonight I’m inclined to kick back a little and relax this afternoon.  The best way for me to relax is to play a few horse races.

TwinspiresTV Control Panel
The best way for me to play a few races today is through my online Twinspires account.  Twinspires is a free service that turns your PC into a personnel OTB center.  TwinSpiresTV lets you take control of the races you want to watch - when you want to watch them. The sleek and modern video player allows you to watch and wager on up to five tracks at once with the highest quality video streaming of any online wagering site.  If you do not have an online wagering account I recommend you open for free by clicking here.  Twinspires is offering a $100 bonus once you deposit funds into your new account.

Since it is a Monday afternoon my choices of tracks are somewhat limited.  I pull down the Twinspires schedule menu and discover that PARX (Philadelphia Park) is running with a 12:30 post.  Perfect!

Twinspires offers free handicapping tools powered by brisnet.com.  I could download the past performances for free but because my focus will be limited I prefer to use some of the easy online tools.  My tool of choice this afternoon is brisnet.com’s Profitline Odds.

Profitline odds represent each horse's estimated probability of winning based on a rigorous computer study encompassing thousands of races. Profitline odds incorporate numerous handicapping factors (speed, class, pace, form, weight, distance, surface, trainer, jockey, pedigree, recency, etc.). Profitline odds are provided for all North American thoroughbred races (not available for harness and foreign races). There are countless ways to use Profitline to help you make winning bets.  For example, the horse with the lowest Profitline odds is deemed to be the most likely winner according to Profitline.

Another approach is to look for Profitline "overlays" (noted in RED). Whenever the current odds of a horse is greater than (or equal to) the Profitline odds, the Profitline odds are displayed in RED. Profitline deems these "overlays" because the current odds are greater than (or equal to) to the horse's estimated fair chances of winning.  This will be my focus this afternoon

Below is the Race 1 Profitline program grid sorted by Profitline odds descending.  This brings the horse with the best chance of winning, according to Profitline, to the top.  I try to use the tool 3 to 4 minutes before post when I make my decision on who to bet.  The top horse, #3 World Record's Profitline odds are 7 to 2.  Since the current odds are in red the current odds are an overlay to to Profitline odds. The #1 Flagged is 2x the Profitline odds.  (current = 9 to 1, PL = 9 to 2).  Betting #1 Flagged represents a very good value bet.
Race #1 Click to Enlarge
Check out the result!!  Flagged comes on in the stretch and wins paying $18.60.  The top pick, # 3 World Record never really showed much in the race. I'm not a real fan on betting 2 horses to win in the same race but even betting 2 here returned a nice profit.   On to Race #2.
Race # 2 Click to Enlarge
In the 2nd race #5 Gentleman Jim did nothing.......on to race #3.

Race #3 Click to Enlarge
#4 Here Comes The Storm at 7 to 1 just misses and finishes 2ed.  He paid $5.50 to place.
Race #4 Click to Enlarge
Race #4, # 5 Roses and Dreams finished out of the money.
Race #5 Click to Enlarge
In Race #5 2 horses are overlays.  #3 Middle Bank and #1 MoneyMoneyMoney.  Of the 2, Middle Bank finished second paying $4.20 to place.
Race #6 Click to Enlarge
In Race #6 once again we have 2 horses with current odds higher than the Profitline odds.  #3 Suzie Sunshine won the race paying $19.80 to win and $5.80 to place.  As before, if you play them both horses to win you have a nice return of $19.80 on a $4.00 bet.
Race #7 Click to Enlarge
Race #7 has only one overlay horse #7 Cantona who wins the race paying $10.60 to win and $4.80 to place.  Note here I lost track of time and my Profitline Numbers above are with 0 minutes to post.  I recommend you make your bets with 3 or 4 minutes before post to avoid getting shut out.  The overlays  will be different at post but was not in this case.
Race #8 Click to Enlarge
In Race #8 with 5 minutes to post we have 2 overlay plays, #2 Thats The Question (20 to 1), and #7 Time For A Winner (19 to 1).  I always look at these situations like playing the lottery.  In the end #7 Time For A Winner was the winner paying $55.50 to win and $25.40 to place.  I'm not suggesting this is typical but a win is a win!!
Race #9 Click to Enlarge
Race #9 gives us 3 overlay runners.  #2 Pale Starlight wins the race paying $9.60 to win and $5,20 to place.  On to the nightcap.
Race #10 Click to Enlarge
In the last race the top Profitline choice, #5 Mr Haywood,  current odds was 2 to 1 compared to the Profitline odds of 7 to 5.  Mr Haywood won paying $5.20 to win and $3.00 to place.

Betting Summary

The table on the right represents details the afternoon's profit assuming you bet every Profitline overlay.  I assume no tie-breaking.  In the 10 races at PARX that afternoon there were 16 betting opportunities.  Of those 16 opportunities 6 were winners (37% win rate) producing a profit of $87.40.  The largest winner was in race #8 when #7 Time For A Winner won paying $55.60.  The smallest winner was in the 10th race where #5 Mr Haywood paid $5.20.

Betting the same horses to place produced of profit of $30.70 cashing 8 wagers out of 16 opportunities (50%).

So for the afternoon I had a little bit of fun and made enough money to pay for my clients dinner.  Not a bad deal!

The problem with this system is that there is no way of back testing as Profitline is a dynamic tool.  It is not a system you can take to the track as you need an internet connection.  Betting in this fashion will produce value bets.  I think Profitline is an excellent tool for horse racing tournaments.

Horse Racing Systems Explained

As a horse racing handicapper and fan for over the past forty years I think I have read all there is to read about horse racing.  Years ago a trip to the track with my buddies was more about the "art" of handicapping rather than the "science".  Horse racing information was simply not that easy to come by.  Information about workouts, past performances, and trainer trends were not as readily available as they are today.  We believed we had a competitive edge simply because we took better notes and kept better records than everyone else at the race track.  That edge does not exist today as the racing form, available to anyone, is full of the same valuable horse racing information that used to take us hours to collect and analyse.

The One Minute Handicapper - Review

Hurricane Irene passed through the Boston area on Sunday washing out horse racing up an down the eastern seaboard.  With no electricity, no TVG, and no Internet connection, the only way to stay in touch with horse racing was by reading.  Some time ago a read a book titled "The One Minute Handicapper".  The title is a play on the 70's and 80's management series, "The One Minute Manager".  I remember the book being informative and easy read....just the "ticket" for a rainy Sunday reading by candlelight.

The Book is authored by Frank DiTondo, an avid horse racing fan, handicapper, and race horse owner.  He proclaims to have got started in horse racing at the age of 12 at of all places Suffolk Downs.  Since that's the same track that propelled my love of the sport, I feel a certain kindsmanship to Mr. DiTondo.

Suffolk Downs Starting Gate
The One Minute Handicapper is not so much the work of a professional handicapper as it is a way to refine and organize the information in the Daily Racing Form.  Mr. DiTonto does a very good job at organizing, prioritizing and simplifying details of the handicapping process.  Frank's process focus is on logical betting situations, and presents those situations in a very easy to understand format.  The whole theory of the One Minute Handicapper is that all the information you need to win a race in in the Daily Racing Form, you just have to know how to find it.

On the One Minute Handicapper web site Mr. DiTonto elaborates on a betting situation known as the first flash. (Chapter 10, section 1)   "First flash can be the smart money. The backside money goes there," he argues. "At my web site, oneminutehandicapper.com, I've got a testimonial from a guy at the Daily Racing Form He said, 'I'm watching the second at Gulfstream. The first flash is on the 1-horse, Letsringthebell, who is 20-1 in the morning line, but opens at 3-5'. It goes up to 12-1 and he puts $20 to win on it and it wins for fun and pays $37."  I have had this same situation play out for me several times in my life but I never really thought of it as a betting strategy.

DiTondo's book also emphasizes taking a long look at beaten favorites.

"When I have a beaten favorite, I go back to the charts and I might see that he had a troubled trip or a poor ride. If you give it second chance, you probably get a better price on it. I picked Nobiz Like Shobiz to win the Wood Memorial because he was a beaten favorite in the Fountain of Youth. He had a troubled trip."  I too have noticed over the years that beaten favorites are often overlooked or given up on presenting a very favorable betting opportunity.

In all there are 22 betting situations detailed in Mr. DiTondo's book.  In each situation he explains the logic or trainer intent behind the angle and includes several winning examples.  Reading this book and following his handicapping situations will make you a better handicapper.  Following the "situations" will better prepare and organize you.  You will especially feel more comfortable in pick-3 and pick -4 situations.

Saratoga Horse Racing Workouts By Way Of Nelson Ave

One of the things I enjoy the most during my stay at Saratoga is attending the morning workouts.  No matter how late I was out the night before I am always at the rail watching the horses train.  For me its more than the views of the early morning race course but it is the sounds and the smell of the track.

I always stay at the Brunswick Bed an Breakfast, across the street and a short distance from the mail gate,  At 6:45 I start for the track being passed by the early morning joggers and folks racing to reserve picnic tables when the area opens at 7:00.  I am always amazed how quickly the picnic tables fill after the gates open.
Clubhouse Breakfast At Saratoga Race Course
After buying a cup of coffee I proceed to the grandstand  boxes at the finish line, right behind the clocker.  If you have never done so you should try the "Breakfast at Saratoga".  It is located downstairs in the clubhouse right at the finish line.

Then there's Mary Ryan, the long time morning track announcer at Saratoga since Seattle Slew was a 2 year old (1976).

Also, take the backside tour.  It is a very good free tour of the stable area.

If however your like me you need a change.  Last week instead of going to the workouts I walked down Nelson Ave.  My walk started at the corner of Nelson and Union, roughly the location of the Brunswick. A short distance down the road is the start of the clubhouse turn.  The only thing between the clubhouse turn and the racetrack is a small service road.  Moving clockwise, on the outside of the track, were sets of fresh horses moving towards the grandstand to begin their workout.   On the rail, horses finishing up their works traveling counter clockwise toward the barns.  The only sounds you could hear were those of the pounding hoofs, and labored breathing of the horses tired by their morning drill.

The next stop, at the top of the clubhouse turn, is chute for the start of the 7 furlong races.  A starting gate was set up in the chute for schooling of young horses likely awaiting their first race.  The assistant starters were working with a Barkley Tagg runner (BT on the saddle cloth) who was very reluctant to load.  The horse fought with the gate personnel for about 20 minutes before quietly loading into the gate.  No one else was there watching.  It was a private show for me.  This is also the place where horses exiting the track cross to return to barns located off the main grounds.  You could literally wait 5 minutes for all the horses to cross.  This was a great resting spot on my journey.

Moving further down the road for the next 200 or so yards there is a training track.  The track is a little deeper and good for injured horses.  Several horses gallop around the small oval literally only  feet from the pavement.  It is a great place to watch horses.

Across the street are the Linda Rice Stables.  You cannot enter the stables but there no need.  You can see the stable workers tending the the horses up close right from the gate.  Linda Rice has a large stable and you can see the need for organization.  I was still standing across the street watching a big gray being hosed down, suds going everywhere when Linda arrived, cell phone in hand, riding a golf cart around the stable.  She looked to be in complete charge  of the stable.

Just beyond the far corner of the Saratoga backstretch is the private stable owned by Godophin an Arab racing stable.  Godophin is a beautiful piece of property with it own training track.  Horses are placed in corrals while workers muck the stables.  Some stand quietly others play under the trees. I could watch the horses play all day.

In all the walk was about 2 1/2 miles and took me about 1 1/2 hours.  I will still go back to the organized workouts but this was a nice change.

Las Vegas Hilton -" PICK THE PONIES" Horse Racing Tournament

The Las Vegas Hilton will be hosting the summer edition of the "Pick The Ponies" tournament August 25th through 27th. The tournament coincides with the Travis Stakes run at Saratoga on the 27th.  Details of the "Pick the Ponies" tournament (and all tournaments) can be found on the HRT411 web site by clicking here  Entry fee is $500 but register early and pay only $450.00.

I moved back to the east about 10 tears ago which  is about the last time I participated in the thrice a year tournament.  Prior to that I would travel to the Hilton in late April as part of my yearly horse racing pilgrimages.  The April tournament was always held the week before the Kentucky Derby.

The Hilton Sports Book under the direction of Jay Kornegay and "Rosemary", has always been a wonderful host providing,  free buffet voucher, reduced rates on rooms, a free welcome reception, and daily prizes provided by the sports book.    I always liked the feel of the Hilton Sports Book.   It has a comfortable auditorium setting with individual tables and lighting (very important for us old timers).  I'm told a lot of tournaments today are held in conference and banquet rooms on circular tables.  I'm not nuts about that feel.  I like the serious look and feel of a sports book.

Tournament play is different than betting at the racetrack.  I'm sure the rules vary by tournament, but at the Hilton you make selections from cards at Hilton selected racetracks (Usually 5).  From those cards you must bet $200 to win, place, and show from a mythical bankroll.  At the end of the tournament whoever has the biggest mythical bankroll is the winner.  Its that easy.

Because you are playing against other contestants it is not only important to have the winner but it has to be at the right price.  Chalk won't do it!!  The Hilton returns all entry fees in the form of prizes making winning the tournament a very lucrative proposition.  The winner of the Hilton tournament usually wins north of $30,000.  First place in the daily contests usually wins north of $3,000.

Once again, get all your tournament details by clicking here. To learn more about the strategy behind winning a tournament buy the book Handicapping Contest Handbook, Revised and Updated: A Horseplayer's Guide to Handicapping Tournaments. by Noel Michaels.

WUNDERDOG Value Play - Battle of the EXES

I watched the TVG interviews yesterday drawing positions and horses for  the Battle of ex-(lovers/friends/whatever), Chantal Sutherland and Mike Smith.  The exes will be competing in a match race at Delmar on Sunday afternnon.  Both should be thanked for a positive horse racing promotion.  They both handled themselves professionally and positively.  I'm looking forward to the race.  Whose side are you on?  I'm rooting for Chantel.  I love underdogs!!

Start of a new week at Saratoga.  Wunderdog value play free selections detailed in the table on the left.

Each Day  Wunderdog sends you selections for 2 races, 1 east coast (usually Saratoga), and 1 west coast (usually Delmar).  The secret is to fins the value which I explain in my value finder system.  I will send you a copy free if you send me your email address by CLICKING HERE.

Linda Rice Scores in Turf Sprint

Linda Rice has made a nice living over the past few years in turf sprints at Saratoga.  She won her first yesterday with Ahvee's Destiny in the $75,000 Smart & Fancy overnight Stakes.  Her backers were handsomely rewarded with a $27.60 payday.

Off to a slow start through the first weeks of the Saratoga meet I think it would be unwise not to consider her future runners "live" especially on the Turf.  Keep an eye on horses saddled by her that are owned by her or Clyde Rice.  She places these horses very well.

If you get a chance to go up to Saratoga this year look for her in the winners circle.

WUNDERDOG Value Play System Results for Monday:

Speaking of Ahvee's Destiny, she was our first play and only winner yesterday for the value play system.  The system had 5 bets in 4 races with one winner.  Profit on a $2.00 bet was $17.60 on win bets and $10.80 on place bets.  To get a free copy of the system CLICK HERE to send me an email.  The system has produced winners at over a 20% clip this week at Saratoga with an average winning price of $19.60.

WUNDERDOG @ the SPA

Wunderdog had another good day at Saratoga yesterday with three of our six top picks winning, including our Best Bet #2 "R King of the Road" ($11.40) in race #7. That race also keyed an exacta that paid $81.50 and a tri-fecta that returned a cool $1,233.00.
Our meet record so far is 6-for-10 with on top winners and 2-for-2 with Best Bets.

This afternoon we have five races from the "Spa."  To suscribe to the "DOG"  Click Here!!

Chantel Sutherland won her first Race at Del Mar yesterday.  The folks at TVG seem to think she will be having a big meet there.  Not only is this lady pretty damn goodlooking but she always gives her best effort at race time.

Bouncing Horses

Horseplayers often argue about the Bounce Theory involving thoroughbreds. Some say it’s practical, others say that’s bunk.

Basically, a horse than bounces simply suffers a negative reaction to his previous outing. Many handicappers, like myself, believe that usually happens after a runner exerts a strenuous effort. Others have their doubts.

To illustrate the theory, say a horse’s speed figures have languished in the lower 70s until winning a route on the grass, posting an 88. In the next start, the thoroughbred is most likely to bounce if the runner is:
  • Racing on the dirt. Grass is an easier surface where horses can string together more consistent trips.
  • A front-runner. Pressured pacesetters are susceptible to fading.
  • Entered in a sprint. Pace is faster in shorter distances, taking its toll on horses. Routes have more even pace figures.
  • Coming off the comeback race within three weeks or less. According to Team Valor racing co-partner Jeff Siegel, "A trainer’s patch-up job after a very fast, very hard race becomes undone.”
  • A claimer. Cheaper animals tend to regress more than stakes horses, who get better handling and more rest.
  • A filly. Females have a tendency to bounce more often than males.
Horses usually bounce off a big move forward that might be triggered by first-time Lasix, a new trainer or jockey, switching to a new surface, changes in equipment, etc.

Reasons for the big move forward likely will have an impact on the possible bounce. Past performances can be your guide. But consider each case individually.

Not all believe in the bounce theory, including Steven Crist, publisher of the Daily Racing Form: “True bouncing probably does occur in relatively rare instances where a big-figure race was genuinely a taxing one, and is more likely to occur when a horse returns on short rest or has been racing frequently and is starting to tail off.

Just because a horse happened to run a career-best race doesn't automatically mean the performance can’t be repeated.”

That’s especially true of young horses when they’re developing en route to becoming stakes contenders. If the price is right, a bet is worth the gamble.

Its HOT in Saratoga - Opening Day is Friday

Weather conditions for opening day in Saratoga are forecasted to be in the mid 90's with high humidly.  A ten race card is slated for tomorrow with the first post off at 1:00 pm (EDT).  The card is made up of 4 turf races and 2 stakes races.  Linda Rice, last year's runner up to Tod Plecher for the training title, is deadly on the grass.  She was especially good on the short turf races.  Keep a close eye on her this year.  Unfortunately she has only one "also eligible" entry on the turf tomorrow.

Twinspires Profit Line Numbers

As discussed yesterday, Twinspires online betting account offers some very useful handicapping tools.  One tool I use regularly is "PROFITLINE"  Profitline is a propriety product developed by Brisnet similar to a morning line.  The difference is in the result, Profitline is a far better predictor of outcome.
I have long believed that the general betting public overbets favorites based on the morning line.  Over the years I have developed a system that takes advantage of differences in the morning line and Profitline allowing me to take advantage of well ment horses that are overlooked by the betting public.

Horses that fit that pattern today at PARX are:

Race 1    # 7         One of The Best
Race 3    # 4         Rapala
Race 6    # 7         Indy Tune
Race 7    # 9         Victory Cat
Race 8    # 2         Bpomding Bi
Race 9    # 2         Bigbossman

Lets see how we do at the end of the day.   If you would like a free copy of this system email me.Send me an email by clicking here..  I will be back to you as quick as possible.

Online Horse Racing

Online Horse Racing  With Twinspires

Horse racing isn't immune from technology advances.  Today the average person can watch and wager on horse racing from the comfort of their living room.  There are many reputable sites that can accommodate your wager but I use Twinspires

While TwinSpires is the Official online wagering site of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby, players are able to wager on virtually every Thoroughbred, Harness and Quarter Horse race from venues across the globe.

Having an online account has allowed me to be more businesslike and professional with my wagering actives.  I no longer have to drive to the race track or simulcast center to place bets saving time and gas.  I no longer place bets on races I have no interest in out of the boredom of waiting for my race.  I even save money an calories by eliminating the temptation of a beer and hot dog.  Having an online account has allowed me to bet every day on only the races I want to bet.  It has allowed me to test systems, and generally keep better focus on my task at hand.

I don't recall how long I have had a Twinspires account but I can tell you it was before they called it Twinspires.  It was known than as Brisnet.  In casual conversation I still refer my online account as my Brisnet account.  Aside from the longevity and trust I have for Twinspites, and the reasons detailed above, here are a few more reasons to consider signing up for a free Twinspires account today.
  • It is FREE to join.  No kidding you can join, and without even making a deposit you have live video access to tracks across the country, and Australia.  I  don't know about you but sometimes I just want to see a race without betting.  Twinspires allows you to do this with no restrictions.
  • Also for FREE you enjoy unlimited access to certain, not all, Brisnet handicapping and speed figures.  I will get into these numbers in a later edition but I have found them to be easier and better predictors than the Daily Racing Form.  Also since they are FREE they are less expensive than the racing form.
  • $100 Sign Up Bonus.  After you have wagered $100 Twinspires deposits another $100 in your account.
  • If you refer a friend to Twinspires your friend gets the same $100 deal and you get a $50 Refer A Friend Bonus.
  • Every time you bet you earn points in their Twinspires Referal Program.  Earn enough points and you can redeem them for cash or merchandise.
  • You can Deposit money through EZmoney, credit on debit cards online.  You can request checks for your winnings anytime.

HATS, HATS, HATS

Hats at Saratoga

The Saratoga meet is full of traditions.  From the traditional tolling of the bell 18 minutes before post to the live music playing before the grandstands, Saratoga never changes.  It's like Saratoga is frozen in time.

For years Saratoga has maintained a formal dress code.  I always bring a sports jacket with just in case I am fortunate enough to find box seats as Saratoga has always enforced a "jacket only" policy for all box seat holders.

Another part of that tradition is lady's hats.  The big, floppy, colorful, floral hats.

On Sunday July 24th Saratoga will host it's 20th annual hat contest.  The tradition signal's the beginning of summer racing at the spa.  Registration will begin at noon  in the grandstand.  The contest will feature the following categories:
  • Kreative Kids for youngsters under 18
  • Fashionably Saratoga

  • Uniquely Saratoga.  Past applicants include battery operated hats.
The contest takes place after the second, third, and fourth races.  Prizes are awarded for each category.

So ladies before embarking on your trip to Saratoga be sure to take your best summer sun hat and enter the contest.  If you don't have a sun hat click here to get more information.
